The tall white building on the left was then the HQ of the Kemper Insurance Co., who, in 1971, deeded the building to the Institute of Cultural Affairs and has turned the building into the Midwest’s largest nonprofit social service center housing 25 agencies serving Uptown’s diverse population. Using an innovative social impact financing scheme, they purchased and installed nearly 500 solar panels on the roof of the building and reduced their electric bill by 25%. The building has been dubbed the ICA GreenRise and hosts training and networking events for sustainable communities from around the country.
